Windows and Mac owners both have meaningful production updates to review tonight. Microsoft released an out-of-band Windows update on September 14 to repair Remote Desktop, Hyper-V Linux-folder sharing, and multichannel USB-audio problems introduced by the September 8 security release; Apple released macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Tahoe 26.7, macOS Sequoia 15.8, and Safari 27 the same day.[1][8]
The short version
- Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2: Microsoft classifies today’s cumulative OOB packages as security updates and says they install automatically through Windows Update under normal policy.[1]
- Older Windows and Server: most September 14 packages are corrective quality updates, not a second Patch Tuesday. Several are Catalog-only deployments for administrators.[16][17][18]
- Mac: Golden Gate 27 is a major upgrade for Apple-silicon and A-series Macs. Tahoe 26.7 and Sequoia 15.8 are security-maintenance alternatives for compatible systems not moving to the new major version yet.[8][13]
- Best practical move: back up first, install the offered update for your exact OS branch, then verify the version and test the workflows you actually use.

What Microsoft released—and what it is not
This is a September 14 out-of-band release, not the regular September Patch Tuesday. Microsoft’s monthly security release arrived September 8; today’s cumulative packages roll that content forward while correcting specific regressions.[1] Preview updates, Insider builds, lifecycle notices, and service advisories are separate categories.
Why Microsoft says to take action
After the September 8 update, affected systems could lose host-folder shares inside Hyper-V-based Linux virtual machines, see Remote Desktop Services stop responding and block new or existing sign-ins, or lose multichannel modes on some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices.[1] The September 14 packages target those failures, but Microsoft still lists a separate USB Audio Class 1.0 Code 10/no-output problem as unresolved.[2][3]
Windows KB and build guide
Phone readers: swipe the table left to see every column. Press Windows key + R, run winver, and compare your version and build with the correct row—never force a KB intended for another branch.
| Windows branch | September 14 package | Resulting build | Release path and practical scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 26H1 | KB5129194 | 28000.2956 | Automatic security update; fixes the three regressions and adds CVE-2026-62721 plus the 26H1-only CVE-2026-85921 correction.[2][7] |
| Windows 11 25H2 / 24H2 | KB5129195 | 26200.9457 / 26100.9457 | Automatic security update; fixes the three regressions and supplies a missed CVE-2026-62721 fix.[3][6] |
| 25H2 / 24H2 hotpatch | KB5129241 | 26200.9448 / 26100.9448 | For eligible hotpatch-enrolled devices; September 8 KB5124008 is a prerequisite. Microsoft says this hotpatch takes effect without a restart.[4] |
| Windows 11 23H2 | KB5129242 | 22631.7584 | Optional non-security OOB correction for the RDS, Hyper-V Plan9, and multichannel-audio regressions.[16] |
| Windows Server 2025 | KB5129235 | 26100.33451 | Non-security cumulative OOB update; Microsoft Catalog deployment; repairs RDS and multichannel audio.[17] |
| Windows Server 2022 | KB5129237 | 20348.5631 | Catalog-only cumulative quality update; repairs RDS and multichannel audio.[18] |
| Windows 10 22H2 ESU / LTSC 2021 | KB5129236 | 19045.7727 / 19044.7727 | Eligible serviced systems only; Catalog delivery is the dependable managed path. This KB does not make unsupported Windows 10 installations eligible.[19] |
Microsoft also published KB5129238 for Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and Server 2019, KB5129239 for LTSB 2016 and Server 2016, KB5129243 for Server 2012 R2 ESU, and KB5129244 for Server 2012 ESU.[1] Those legacy/server packages need exact edition, ESU, servicing-stack, and deployment checks; administrators should not treat the table above as a universal manual-install list.
The security correction inside the Windows OOB
For Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2, Microsoft says the OOB includes a missed fix for CVE-2026-62721, an Important Windows User-Mode Power Service elevation-of-privilege flaw. Microsoft lists it as not publicly disclosed and not exploited at the cutoff, while rating exploitation “more likely”; the advisory recommends installing the corrective updates as soon as possible.[6]
Windows 11 26H1 also receives a fix for CVE-2026-85921, a Critical Secure Kernel Mode elevation-of-privilege flaw that Microsoft lists as not publicly disclosed, not exploited, and “exploitation less likely” at the cutoff.[7] “Not exploited” is Microsoft’s current evidence state, not a guarantee that exploitation can never occur.
How to check and update a Windows PC
- Save open work and confirm important files are backed up.
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and record the version and OS build. - Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- On Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, or 24H2, allow the automatic September 14 security update to install. On 23H2, check Advanced options → Optional updates if you need the corrective package.[1]
- Restart if requested, run
winveragain, and test Remote Desktop, Hyper-V shared folders, audio, VPN, printing, and line-of-business apps that matter to you.
Apple’s September 14 Mac releases
Apple’s public security ledger lists macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Tahoe 26.7, macOS Sequoia 15.8, and Safari 27 as released September 14.[8] Apple’s Developer release page identifies the production Golden Gate build as macOS 27.0 (26A428); the checked page did not publish Tahoe 26.7 or Sequoia 15.8 build identifiers, so this guide does not invent them.[9]
| Your Mac | Update path | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Apple-silicon or A-series Mac compatible with Golden Gate | macOS Golden Gate 27 | Major upgrade with a large security advisory and new features; back up and check app/peripheral compatibility first.[10][13] |
| Mac staying on Tahoe | macOS Tahoe 26.7 plus Safari 27 | Recommended security-maintenance path while a major-version rollout is deferred.[8][11] |
| Mac staying on Sequoia | macOS Sequoia 15.8 plus Safari 27 | Recommended security-maintenance path for compatible Macs still serviced on Sequoia.[8][12] |
| Intel Mac | Install the supported Tahoe or Sequoia update offered | Golden Gate 27 requires Apple silicon or an A-series chip and is unavailable for Intel Macs.[13] |
Apple’s Golden Gate advisory contains root- and kernel-level impact scenarios, including arbitrary-code execution and privacy-control bypasses; Tahoe 26.7 and Sequoia 15.8 carry many of the same classes of fixes.[10][11][12] Apple did not include an in-the-wild exploitation statement on the checked Mac advisories. That absence should not be rewritten as proof that every flaw is low risk.
The latest dated Background Security Improvement remains the March 17, 2026 WebKit release; Apple’s current ledger shows no September 14 Rapid Security Response or Background Security Improvement.[8][14] Today’s Mac action is the full production OS/Safari release, not a background-only patch.
What Mac owners should do
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install the security update offered for the branch you intend to keep; Software Update offers only compatible software.[13]
- Before Golden Gate 27, verify a backup and check VPN, endpoint protection, accounting software, printers, scanners, audio devices, network shares, browser extensions, and any specialist plug-ins.
- After installation, open Apple menu → About This Mac to verify the version. On Golden Gate, the expected production build is 26A428.[9]
- Businesses should pilot Golden Gate first; Tahoe 26.7 or Sequoia 15.8 can be the near-term security path while compatibility testing continues.
Good points and cautions
Good
- Microsoft moved quickly with cumulative corrective packages.
- Modern Windows 11 branches also receive missed/new security corrections.
- Apple offers both a major upgrade and maintained older-branch security updates.
- Official KBs and advisories make version-specific verification possible.
Bad / caution
- The Windows OOB exists because the September 8 update caused real operational regressions.
- One USB Audio Class 1.0 problem remains unresolved.
- Legacy Windows and Server deployment rules are easy to misread.
- Golden Gate is a major upgrade, and Apple publishes no universal compatibility guarantee for third-party tools.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Windows update another Patch Tuesday?
No. September 8 was Patch Tuesday. September 14 is an out-of-band corrective release, although the Windows 11 26H1/25H2/24H2 packages are classified as security updates.[1]
Should I uninstall the September 8 Windows update first?
For most Windows versions, no. Microsoft says the September 14 packages are cumulative and include the September 8 improvements; the hotpatch path is the notable exception because KB5129241 requires the September 8 baseline.[1][4]
Does the OOB fix every USB audio problem?
No. It addresses multichannel-mode failures, but Microsoft still lists a separate USB Audio Class 1.0 Code 10/no-output issue as unresolved.[2][3]
Must every Mac upgrade to Golden Gate tonight?
No. Compatible users can choose the major upgrade when ready, while Tahoe 26.7 and Sequoia 15.8 provide current security-maintenance paths. Intel Macs cannot install Golden Gate 27.[8][13]
Were these Apple flaws actively exploited?
Apple did not include an active-exploitation statement in the checked Golden Gate, Tahoe, or Sequoia advisories. That is a point-in-time vendor statement, not proof that exploitation is impossible.[10][11][12]
