Jennifer presents four Steam games that are free to play through August 3, 2026

Four paid PC games are free to play on Steam this weekend: WWE 2K26, Necesse, Reaper Actual, and Tower Dominion. Steam’s U.S. store pages show access ending Monday, August 3, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific—1:00 p.m. Eastern. I checked every store page and promotion directly on July 31 at 2:09 p.m. EDT.

Quick answer

Install these four games now; play through Monday afternoon

Open each official Steam page, select Play Game, and choose where to install it. You get the full-game free-play license only for the promotional window. If you buy a game afterward, Steam normally keeps the installed files and supported save progress.

Deadline: Monday, August 3 at 1:00 p.m. EDT / 10:00 a.m. PDT.

Important: these are not free-to-keep giveaways. You can play without buying during the event, but the license expires when the weekend ends. A sale price is optional and is not required to participate.

Jennifer’s fast picks

  • Start with Necesse if you want the most flexible weekend: solo, co-op, exploration, settlement management, and a fresh Rust & Romance update.
  • Choose Tower Dominion for a focused strategy game with a tiny download compared with the others.
  • Try WWE 2K26 if you want immediate spectacle and recognizable match modes—but clear substantial drive space first.
  • Save Reaper Actual for a capable gaming PC; it is an online Early Access shooter with the heaviest minimum graphics requirement in this group.

1Necesse — the best all-around weekend pick

Developer and publisher: Fair Games ApS · Action, adventure, indie RPG

Necesse blends top-down exploration and boss fights with colony management, crafting, farming, mining, and automation across a procedurally generated world. It works as a solo project or a cooperative “let’s build something ridiculous” weekend game.

Why try itLow storage requirement, solo/co-op flexibility, and a broad progression loop.
Current eventThe developer says its Rust & Romance update and Steam Free Weekend are live together.

Good: At only 500 MB of listed minimum storage, this is the easiest game here to install on short notice. The developer also confirms that existing saves work, although it recommends a new world to see the new update fully.

Caution: The Steam requirements note that some Intel graphics drivers may cause crashes. Update your graphics driver before troubleshooting the game itself.

2Reaper Actual — the ambitious online shooter

Developer and publisher: Distinct Possibility Studios, Inc. · Action, massively multiplayer, Early Access

Reaper Actual is an open-world persistent shooter set on the war-torn island of Marova. Players fight one another and five NPC factions, level their Reapers, maintain a base, and run missions for gear.

Weekend accessThe developer says this is the live game on the normal servers with the same progression and no trial key.
CarryoverIts official announcement says progress carries over if you buy the game later.

Good: This is the best chance to test the game’s live population, gunplay, mission structure, and progression before spending money.

Caution: It is still in Early Access and demands a relatively strong PC: Steam lists 16 GB RAM, an RTX 3070 or RX 7600-class GPU, broadband internet, and 48 GB of storage as minimums.

3WWE 2K26 — the blockbuster choice

Developer: Visual Concepts · Publisher: 2K · Simulation and sports

WWE 2K26 is the high-budget option this weekend. The official listing highlights CM Punk’s 2K Showcase, more than 400 playable Superstars and Legends, and new match types. It is ideal for sampling several modes instead of trying to finish everything before Monday.

Best use of the weekendTry Showcase, experiment with the roster, and test performance before committing.
Checked discount$34.99, down from $69.99, with Steam showing the purchase offer ending Aug. 3.

Good: The free period removes the biggest barrier to deciding whether the current roster, modes, and presentation are right for you.

Caution: Steam lists 120 GB of storage, 16 GB RAM, DirectX 12, an RTX 2060/RX 5700-class GPU, and an AVX2-capable processor as minimum requirements. Start the download early.

4Tower Dominion — the smart strategy pick

Developer and publisher: Parallel 45 Games · Strategy

Tower Dominion adds roguelike structure to tower defense. You shape terrain, choose among three factions, recruit from more than 30 heroes, and combine towers, doctrines, and perks against an alien invasion.

Why try itRuns are designed around experimentation, making it easy to learn over a weekend.
Low download burdenSteam lists only 2 GB of storage and 4 GB RAM as minimums.

Good: It is the easiest pick for a strategy fan—or anyone who does not want to spend Friday night waiting on a 120 GB download.

Caution: The developer’s announcement describes the event as July 30 through August 2, while Steam’s live purchase box gives the more precise cutoff of Aug. 3 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. Treat Steam’s live timer as authoritative and do not wait until the final minute.

How to install a Steam free-weekend game

  1. Open the official store link. Sign in to the Steam desktop client or use the browser page to open Steam.
  2. Find the “Play Game” button. Do not confuse it with the optional discounted purchase button.
  3. Select an installation drive. Check free space first—especially for WWE 2K26.
  4. Let Steam finish downloading and updating. A partially downloaded game does not extend the free period.
  5. Launch before Monday’s cutoff. If you buy afterward, Steam can generally reuse the installed files rather than downloading everything again.

Free weekend versus free to keep

A free weekend is a temporary license: install and play now, then purchase if you want access after the timer expires. A free-to-keep promotion permanently adds the game to your library after you claim it. This weekend’s four confirmed games are temporary free-play offers.

You may see reports naming Moonlighter or Deponia as upcoming August free-to-keep games. I did not count them here because their official Steam pages did not show a live 100%-off claim offer when checked. That avoids promising a giveaway before Steam actually exposes it.

Before you click Play Game

  • Check storage and download time: advertised storage is not the same as the total bandwidth Steam may use after unpacking and patching.
  • Confirm the correct button: “Play Game” starts the free access; “Add to Cart” purchases the discounted license.
  • Expect online requirements: Reaper Actual is a persistent online game and requires broadband.
  • Remember that Early Access changes: Reaper Actual may have unfinished systems, bugs, and balance changes.
  • Check the live Steam timer: prices and availability can change, and the store page is the final authority.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep these four games forever?

No. They are temporary free-play licenses. Access ends after the promotional window unless you purchase the game.

When exactly does the Steam free weekend end?

The official U.S. Steam pages showed Monday, August 3, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, which is 1:00 p.m. Eastern. Check the live Steam page in case Valve or a publisher changes the timer.

Will my progress carry over if I buy the game?

Reaper Actual’s developer explicitly says weekend progress carries over. Necesse has also documented save carryover for its free weekends. For WWE 2K26 and Tower Dominion, retain local/cloud saves and confirm the current Steam Cloud support shown on each store page.

Can I install the game now and play it after the deadline?

No. Keeping the files installed does not preserve the temporary license. Steam will require a purchase after access expires.

Which game has the smallest download requirement?

Necesse lists 500 MB of minimum storage, followed by Tower Dominion at 2 GB. WWE 2K26 is the largest at 120 GB.

Are the sale prices required to play this weekend?

No. The purchase discounts are optional. Choose the “Play Game” button for the free period and “Add to Cart” only if you want to own the game.

Will these work on Steam Deck?

Compatibility can change with game and Proton updates. Check the current Steam Deck compatibility badge on each official store page before downloading; this article does not substitute for Valve’s live compatibility result.
