One paid PC game is free to play on Steam this weekend: s&box, Facepunch Studios’ game-creation platform. Steam’s live U.S. page shows the temporary “Play Game” offer ending Monday, October 5, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific—1:00 p.m. Eastern—and lists the optional purchase at $7.99, down from $9.99.[1]

Best for

Players who enjoy community-made games—and curious creators who want to test a modern editor and C# tools.

Weekend plan

Browse community creations first, party up with friends, then open the editor only if building sounds more fun than playing.

Download reality

Steam lists 12 GB available space minimum and 50 GB recommended, with 16 GB RAM minimum.[1]

Free weekend does not mean free to keep. The temporary license expires after the event. The separate 20% purchase discount is optional; use Steam’s Play Game control for the free period rather than Add to Cart.[1]

s&box — hundreds of community-made games in one platform

What it is

s&box is both a game platform and a creation toolkit. Facepunch describes hundreds of community-made shooters, role-playing games, racing games, platformers, horror experiences and other experiments that you can open from one library. Its editor uses scenes, C# scripting and hotloading, while multiplayer is built into the platform.[1]

Why it is worth trying

A normal weekend trial can tell you whether one game feels right. This one lets you sample many community creations, test how quickly friends can join, and explore the editor before deciding whether the platform deserves a permanent place in your library.

Good

The free event overlaps the Game Jam grand finals. Facepunch says more than 400 games were made during the three-week jam, giving new players a timely group of creations to explore and vote on.[2]

Know before you start

The official listing includes in-game purchases, chance-based in-game purchases, chat and online interaction. Community-created content can also vary widely, and Facepunch says user-generated content may include AI-generated material.[1]

How to play s&box free this weekend

  1. Open the official Steam page using the blue button above.
  2. Sign in to Steam and select Play Game. That control starts the temporary access; Add to Cart buys the discounted permanent license.
  3. Choose an installation drive with enough room. Steam lists 12 GB minimum, but its recommended specification lists 50 GB.
  4. Finish the download and launch before the cutoff. Leaving files installed does not extend the temporary license.
  5. Check the live timer again if you wait until Monday. Store availability and pricing can change without notice.

What happens after the free weekend?

When temporary access ends, Steam can leave the installed files on your drive, but the game will require a valid license to launch. Buying s&box afterward should not require you to intentionally delete those files first; let the Steam client validate or update them. Save and cloud behavior can vary between community experiences, so do not assume every creation preserves progress in the same way.

What is announced next?

Facepunch’s weekend announcement is tied to the current Game Jam finals; it does not promise another free weekend. I found no separate, live Steam free-to-keep base-game offer to include in this weekend’s roundup as of the reporting cutoff.[5] That negative finding is limited to the U.S. storefront routes and official candidate pages checked—not a promise that Steam will not add another offer later.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep s&box after Monday?

No. Steam labels this as “Play for free until,” which is temporary access. Buy it only if you want a permanent license after the event.[1]

When does the Steam free weekend end?

The U.S. Steam page displays October 5 at 10:00 a.m. and its live promotion timer resolves to 10:00 a.m. Pacific / 1:00 p.m. Eastern / 5:00 p.m. UTC. Facepunch’s announcement confirms the event runs through Monday, October 5.[1][2]

Is s&box the same kind of game as Garry’s Mod?

Facepunch calls it a game-creation platform and a spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod, but s&box is its own product with a modern editor, Source 2 technology and community-published games.[4]

Does it run on Mac or Linux?

The current Steam store listing exposes Windows as the supported desktop platform for this product page. Check the live platform icons before installing because support can change.[1]

Is the $7.99 price required for the weekend?

No. The store presents a free Play Game control and a separate optional purchase block. The sale does not need to be purchased to use the temporary free-play offer.[1]
