1Necesse — the best all-around weekend pick
Necesse blends top-down exploration and boss fights with colony management, crafting, farming, mining, and automation across a procedurally generated world. It works as a solo project or a cooperative “let’s build something ridiculous” weekend game.
Good: At only 500 MB of listed minimum storage, this is the easiest game here to install on short notice. The developer also confirms that existing saves work, although it recommends a new world to see the new update fully.
Caution: The Steam requirements note that some Intel graphics drivers may cause crashes. Update your graphics driver before troubleshooting the game itself.
2Reaper Actual — the ambitious online shooter
Reaper Actual is an open-world persistent shooter set on the war-torn island of Marova. Players fight one another and five NPC factions, level their Reapers, maintain a base, and run missions for gear.
Good: This is the best chance to test the game’s live population, gunplay, mission structure, and progression before spending money.
Caution: It is still in Early Access and demands a relatively strong PC: Steam lists 16 GB RAM, an RTX 3070 or RX 7600-class GPU, broadband internet, and 48 GB of storage as minimums.
3WWE 2K26 — the blockbuster choice
WWE 2K26 is the high-budget option this weekend. The official listing highlights CM Punk’s 2K Showcase, more than 400 playable Superstars and Legends, and new match types. It is ideal for sampling several modes instead of trying to finish everything before Monday.
Good: The free period removes the biggest barrier to deciding whether the current roster, modes, and presentation are right for you.
Caution: Steam lists 120 GB of storage, 16 GB RAM, DirectX 12, an RTX 2060/RX 5700-class GPU, and an AVX2-capable processor as minimum requirements. Start the download early.
4Tower Dominion — the smart strategy pick
Tower Dominion adds roguelike structure to tower defense. You shape terrain, choose among three factions, recruit from more than 30 heroes, and combine towers, doctrines, and perks against an alien invasion.
Good: It is the easiest pick for a strategy fan—or anyone who does not want to spend Friday night waiting on a 120 GB download.
Caution: The developer’s announcement describes the event as July 30 through August 2, while Steam’s live purchase box gives the more precise cutoff of Aug. 3 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. Treat Steam’s live timer as authoritative and do not wait until the final minute.
How to install a Steam free-weekend game
- Open the official store link. Sign in to the Steam desktop client or use the browser page to open Steam.
- Find the “Play Game” button. Do not confuse it with the optional discounted purchase button.
- Select an installation drive. Check free space first—especially for WWE 2K26.
- Let Steam finish downloading and updating. A partially downloaded game does not extend the free period.
- Launch before Monday’s cutoff. If you buy afterward, Steam can generally reuse the installed files rather than downloading everything again.
Free weekend versus free to keep
A free weekend is a temporary license: install and play now, then purchase if you want access after the timer expires. A free-to-keep promotion permanently adds the game to your library after you claim it. This weekend’s four confirmed games are temporary free-play offers.
You may see reports naming Moonlighter or Deponia as upcoming August free-to-keep games. I did not count them here because their official Steam pages did not show a live 100%-off claim offer when checked. That avoids promising a giveaway before Steam actually exposes it.
